In Space_in_Between, Steven Natal assembles an ecosystem of different images and connects them together to form a unique visual narrative. Inspired by the concept of subtext and negative spaces, Natal constructs a series of stories that capture the essence of transitional areas in which meaning takes shape, independent of any articulated explanation. He projects silent gestures into his work, allowing the viewer to transcend surface-level understanding and develop a deeper and more personal connection towards the imagery presented before them. Because within the utilization of these spaces, he gives his audience a hollow, bare spot that they can fill with their own experiences and interpretations. These are spaces of the mundane, the things we fail to notice but feel nonetheless, the silent moments that speak to us through the unsaid, and through this void; this tiny hushed universe, we find something so new, and yet it was something that has always been there. This perhaps is the general feeling that Natal’s work emanates: an obscure sorrow, a nostalgia for a memory that one has never known, an invisible beauty floating within the banal and the unknown, a word that we couldn’t really pinpoint, but yet our heart knows it as it is spoken by the gestures of our own soul.
