Stitching Faith and Fashion in Tapestry and Artwear

Steve de Leon

March 14 to April 21, 2021

As if by fate--guided by the Holy Spirit--fashion designer and artist Steve De Leon has merged in sync his two bespoke interests—fashion and history in his exhibition Stitching Faith and Fashion in Tapestry and Artwear. Leveling up in significance, he has even paralleled its narrative with Philippine history—all creatively integrating further weaving the different mysteries of the rosary as we commemorate the 500th anniversary of the advent of our Christian faith this month.…

Reprising his exhibition of the Mysteries of the Rosaries through a series of artworks from Art-to-Wear and Trapunto tapestries, De Leon has assembled from found objects, indigenous and tribal weaves and crafts, antique jewelry and organic materials of his choice. The late cultural critic and writer, Gilda Cordero Fernando interpreted them as soft sculptures, De Leon’s bravura is his versatility at connecting the foundation of our identity to his personal beliefs and social take of our colonial history.
